Tuesday Spotlight: Naomi Musch

In Love with a Conflicted Hero

Heroes come in all types, from the tall, dark, and handsome white knight, to the flawed, rugged and misunderstood outsider, to the bad boy anti-hero. Perfection is hardly ever part of their make-up.

We admire a diverse heroine too, whether she is beautiful, forlorn, cast out, misguided, or simply taken advantage of. But what we don't care for, generally speaking, are weak and put-upon heroines. We don't want her to be passive unless it's clear early on that she is going to grow wings to help her rise above her torment.

In short, we love strong men and women whose emotions are twisted by inner conflict so much so that they sometimes make contrary choices which lead them into deep water, pulling us along, engaging us in their struggle to swim out.

In my novel, The Green Veil, Manason is that conflicted hero. He's smart, ambitious, good looking, and a leader of men. Unfortunately, he's a little gullible when it comes to one particular conniving female. He's tempted by her charms to leave his dreams behind.

My heroine, Colette, is contrary. She has the tendency to let her compassionate heart rule her better judgment. When she's offered a second chance with her first love, her decision rests on whether she can or should remain faithful to her marriage vows. Either way, there'll be ruin in her wake.

Life doesn't always offer easy answers, so it's important to me that the answers don’t come easy in books. If I can keep my readers engaged and guessing, then I've succeeded in introducing to them a hero and heroine who are genuine, and with whom they can fall in love just like I did.

Do you have a favorite conflicted hero or contrary heroine?

Pop in tomorrow, because I'm excited to talk with you about those real bad boys -- the villains.

Naomi and husband Jeff enjoy epic adventures around their home in the Wisconsin woods with their five young adults. She is currently hard at work editing Book 2 of the Empire in Pine series, releasing in October, 2011 from Desert Breeze Publishing. She invites readers to say hello and find out more about her stories, passions, and other writing venues at or look her up on Facebook and Twitter (NMusch).

Talk about conficted heroes - Sean in Heart Not Taken! My stomach still curls a bit at all he went through. I especially identify having father, hubby, and son as public school teachers.

Ooh! Stomach curling! I love it! Couldn't ask for a better reader reaction than that. Thanks for stopping by, Lisa.
