Vicki, Vicki, Vicki, you are such a delightful writer! (and person!) This little nugget brought back an endearing memory when the MC (me) marched an equally terrified "Ben" (my adorable five-year-old cousin coincidentally named Vickie) back to the local drugstore to pay for some "palmed" bubblegum. Big difference, however...I was twelve at the time and was not rewarded for doing my civic duty by a charming store manager...rather sniffed at by the sanctimonious, pinch-faced old bag who ran the register. I like your story much better! =)
