Heroine’s Character Development in CAPTURING KARMA

Heroine Matilda (Matty) Connors, makes a cameo appearance in Book 2 of the Sullivan Boys series. Matty’s original, limited role was to serve as a police informant with information that points towards Jimmy Sullivan’s killer. We considered and discarded several scenarios where Matty imparts this integral clue before deciding that she possesses psychic abilities. Then the information could be uniquely revealed to Brian Sullivan as his brother channels through “spooky” Matilda Connors. Once we arrived at this decision, Matty’s mystique blossomed, holding Brian Sullivan enthralled: in his words, “Lost and found”.

Matty so captivated Brian, she had to reappear in CAPTURING KARMA for their karma to play out. Matty’s profession as a veterinarian departed from our original vision of her as an ethereal, free spirit, engaged in odd jobs, as she “spoke” to Kathie while drafting the cameo scene in BEYOND THE CODE OF CONDUCT. Kathie saw her as a vet who cured Brian’s colleague’s dog of covert chocolate overdosing via her psychic abilities.

Matty emerged as the fully-formed, three dimensional heroine for us when Kathie declared (on one of our brainstorming walks), “She is THE Matty Connors.” Her past working with the police in California and the reputation that precedes her in Chicago flowed rapidly from that pronouncement.

Veterinarian Matty Connors’ visions lead her to homicide detective Brian Sullivan once again despite her resolve to remain anonymous the past four years. Her official work with the police in California resulted in the brutal murder of her fiancé, and since, a recurrent nightmare she barely survives. Brian, the reputed ladies man of the Sullivan family, has yet to give his heart to a woman until Matty lays claim to it. His black-and-white approach to solving crimes doesn’t jibe with Matty’s spooky pronouncements or her reputation for alleged infallibility. A wild goose chase searching for a murder weapon casts doubt on Matty’s “truths” and threatens their smoldering romance. Is Brian her nightmare slayer and ultimate truth? When the puzzle pieces fall in place for Brian, will it be too late to save Matty?
